It has been a while since we've done a snapshot feature of the Cross Island Line (CRL), with our last being done in February for the Punggol Extension. Part of this stems for the works being "less noticeable", since the majority of this takes place underground and relatively out of sight. Another part is that it also appears that updates on the CRL aren't as popular compared to updates on other lines (granted, the above ground line updates are A LOT more interesting as you actually see things change with most monthly updates). Nonetheless, we thought it's time to see where the CRL is in progress with this rather comprehensive mid-year update.

Phase 1
Several milestones were hit this past month, including the completion of several tunnels for the line. As not much fanfare was made about the accomplishment, we're still trying to verify facts and not make assumptions on the progress of tunneling works - hence do bear with us if some of the updates are slightly slow. Tunneling works are now in progress for 10 of the 11 contracts with such works - the remaining contract being CR108 at Pasir Ris.

Tunneling chart, to the best of the team's knowledge, as of May 2025 for CRL1.

Changi East Depot (Contract CR101)
In a nutshell: The structures of the stabling sheds were pushing ahead with the roof frames being assembled and roofing added in. Other components of the depot were also in various stages of structural progress - the administration building which will house the Operations Control Centre for the line & workshops. The administration building can be seen as a concrete structure coming up behind the stabling sheds while the workshops are not as far along as compared to the stabling sheds.

CR2 – Aviation Park (Contract CR103)
In a nutshell: Excavation for the station box was ongoing.

19 May 2025

CR3 - Loyang (Contract CR106)
In a nutshell: The launch shaft was handed over to Woh Hup-Dongah Joint Venture. Since then, tunneling work for the eastbound tunnel appears to have commenced. Sections of the TBM back up gantries were seen on site along with tunnel ring segments.

CR5 | CP1 - Pasir Ris (Contract CR108)
In a nutshell: Hacking works were taking place within the contract's launch shaft at the eastern end of the work site. Diaphragm wall works continued as road realignment preparation works were taking place. In a recent virtual town hall session, diaphragm wall works are expected to continue up to mid-2026. Tunneling works are expected to commence in Q4 2025.

CR6 - Tampines North (Contract CR109)
In a nutshell: One of the gantry cranes has since been relocated from the northern launch shaft to the southern shaft. A large crane was on site at the southern launch shaft while an excavator removed muck from the mucking pit into a steady stream of waiting tipper trucks. It can be inferred that construction of at least one tunnel connecting the station to Pasir Ris has been completed and the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) since redeployed for the run towards FB3 being constructed under contract CR110.

Large diameter bored tunnels – Paya Lebar Air Base (Contract CR110)
In a nutshell: The large crawler crane that was employed for the lowering of the TBM components into the launch shaft at the site of FB3 has since been decommissioned and removed from site. Tunneling works are likely to have commenced on the single drive towards Defu station, as the gantry crane was observed moving tunnel ring segments. The muck removal system employed for this TBM uses conveyor belts for the continuous removal of muck, as opposed to work trains with muck cars for the TBMs of smaller diameters.

CR7 - Defu (Contract CR111)
In a nutshell: Tunneling works appear to be focused on the westbound tunnel that TBM Daphne is constructing, with both gantry cranes busy supporting the tunneling operations. The surface watchman post, denoted by the multi-colour umbrella serves as an indicator of the TBM's location - potentially indicative that TBM Daphne has completed the initial drive and is preparing to convert into the main drive stage of tunnel boring. Further along the site, it appears that diaphragm wall excavation works have been completed due to the absence of hydrofraise and clamshell grabber machines on site.

CR8 - Hougang (Contract CR112)
In a nutshell: Hoarding within the station for the construction of a temporary platform lift had been completed. Additional hoarding within the concourse fare unpaid area was also set up to facilitate addition & alteration works within the station. At street level, construction works for the third phase of diaphragm walls continued following the road diversions enacted in end-March.

CR9 - Serangoon North (Contract CR113)
In a nutshell: Owing to the station's length, diaphragm wall construction works were underway at various sites along the project's work areas. Excavation works were in progress in the vicinity of Exit 3 as well, while such works appear to have been completed at the site of Exit 4 where pipe jacking works will take place.

CR10 - Tavistock (Contract CR115)
In a nutshell: Following several road layout changes, demolition of a pedestrian overhead bridge and relocation of pedestrian crossings, diaphragm wall works were now taking place in the centre median of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3. A mobile crane was also recently seen at the site of the intermediate launch shaft at Teck Ghee Park, possibly indicating that the third TBM might have been recently lowered into the shaft.

CR12 – Teck Ghee (Contract N109A)
In a nutshell: Since the completion of the subway constructed by the rectangular TBM at Exit 3, the machine has been redeployed to the site of Exit 2 to repeat the process for a shorter underpass. Structural works continued underneath Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 for the expressway tunnels and rail station.

CR13 – Bright Hill (Contract CR117)
In a nutshell: Bored piling works continued along the length of the worksite at the interchange station. Bored piles typically would take longer to construct for a wall of similar length than diaphragm walls which are constructed panel by panel. It is likely that the stronger rock encountered in the area necessitated the use of bored piles as opposed to diaphragm walls. Tunneling works appear to have commenced recently, with the surface watchmen post marking the location of the TBM underground.

Punggol Extension
Works along this stretch are still at an early stage as compared to phase 1 of the line. As such, earth retaining & stablising structure (ERSS) construction is ongoing and excavation works have not commenced in earnest. The project will employ the use of 2 TBMs, both of which have since been delivered.

Tunneling chart, to the best of the team's knowledge, as of May 2025 for CPE.

CP2 – Elias (Contract P102)
In a nutshell: Construction of the diaphragm walls for the launch shaft had been completed and excavation works progressed. Hacking and mining of the adit through which the TBM will begin its drive were potentially underway within the peanut-shaped shaft. TBM components had since been delivered to site, although no gantry cranes were set up in the vicinity of the launch shaft yet. Elsewhere along the station worksite, diaphragm wall construction was in progress.

Phase 2
As the most recently announced segment of the line, works here are at the least advanced stages among the contracts for the line, with one notable exception. Due to the length of the tunnel connecting this phase of the line to phase 1, the contract for the tunnel undercrossing the Central Catchment Nature Reserve was awarded early. This past month saw the launching of the TBM for this contract to begin tunneling works, the first for phase 2 of the line.

Tunnels connecting Turf City & Bright Hill stations (Contract CR202)
In a nutshell: This contract was the first phase 2 contract to be awarded. As such, it was the first phase 2 contract to commence tunnel construction with the launch of TBM Jane from the launch shaft south of the Pan Island Expressway, on the site of the former Bukit Timah Saddle Club.

CR17 – Clementi (Contract CR208)
In a nutshell: Diaphragm wall construction works were in full swing for the northern end of the station, where ventilation buildings and exit structures would come up on the site of the former Police headquarters & neighbourhood police centre building. Community facilities such as the amphitheater and playground were also closed off, to be redeveloped as part of the station construction project. ERSS construction for the main station box had not yet commenced fully, as road diversions would likely necessitate the realignment of Clementi Avenue 4 further eastwards to enable such works.

CR18 – West Coast (Contract CR209)
In a nutshell: With Tanglin Secondary School since demolished, works were focused on construction of the station's ERSS walls. Several hydrofraise and clamshell grabber machines were on site to facilitate these works at two sites - one next to the Jamiyah Nursing Home and a second at the main station box site. The site next to the nursing home is especially important as it would likely double up as a launch shaft for tunneling works towards Clementi station.
