28 February 2025 - A view of the NEL station atrium amidst modification works. |
As we approach the end of February, works at Hougang's North East Line (NEL) station are beginning to ramp up as it prepares for additional footfall when the Cross Island Line (CRL) connects here. Part of the initial works will see a temporary platform lift being installed to connect the platform and concourse levels. The markings for hoarding along this installation were previously laid out approximately a month ago.

Recently, notices were placed in several discreet locations around the station to inform commuters of the changes - the lift car at exit B and at the existing lift's shaft. These explain the changes that will be taking place and when they will be effected.

The works are required as a new lift shaft will be built against the back of the existing lift shaft, negating changes to the existing lift landing. The concourse slab within the paid area of the station will also be significantly expanded to cater for additional passengers expected once the station begins offering transfer connections between the NEL & CRL. Based on the notices, work on the installation of the hoarding will begin in end-February and last till around May, when the platform lift can be expected to be commissioned. Before we close off, here are some pictures to recall how the station used to look and its appearance these days.

In short, the changes to Hougang station had commenced with the removal of the cladding within the station last May. Additional works are in the pipeline and will commence at the end of the month, bringing further changes to the NEL station as we know.
