This morning, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the award of another Cross Island Line (CRL) Phase 2 civil contract to a successful tenderer. The contract, CR206, is for the construction of Maju station and tunnels connecting to King Albert Park station, which will be built under contract CR205. With the award of contract CR206 contractor KTC Civil Engineering & Construction Pte Ltd, a total of 5 civil contracts for CRL2 have since been awarded successfully.

The successful tenderer for contract CR206 - KTC Civil Engineering & Construction - has been involved in the construction of several MRT projects locally. They had previously completed the Tampines (Central) and Orchard Boulevard stations along the Downtown and Thomson-East Coast Lines as the main contractor previously. The contractor is currently in charge of building the Sungei Bedok station, which also serves the two lines mentioned before. Interestingly though, this will be KTC's first foray into a civil contract which involves the construction of bored tunnels.

Previous contracts that were subsequently completed were station-only contracts - Tampines (Central) being contract 925 & Orchard Boulevard being contract T218. The Sungei Bedok station contract - T312 - involves cut & cover tunnels and not bored tunnels using TBMs. It will be interesting to see if KTC brings along any other sub-contractors to assist with the bored tunneling section.

With contract CR206's award, 4 civil contracts of the CRL2 remain to be awarded. Construction has commenced for one of the contracts thus far - CR202 for the tunnels connecting to Bright Hill that undercross the Central Catchment Nature Reserve - and the three other contracts awarded are due to begin construction by end of Q1 2024. We look forward to the commencement of construction and pending awards for the remaining contracts over the course of the year.
