Today, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced the award of contract CR203 for the design & construction of Turf City station and associated tunnels connecting to King Albert Park station. The contract was won by a joint venture between Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (STEC) & Obayashi Corporation. The joint venture had also previously won adjacent contract CR202 for the construction of a large diameter, single bored tunnel underneath the Central Catchment Nature Reserve that connects Turf City station to Bright Hill station under phase 1 of the line.

Other contracts currently being undertaken by STEC include the construction of Teck Ghee station (Contract N109A), construction of tunnels between Aviation Park station, the Changi East depot & Changi Airport Terminal 5 (Contract CR102) and the construction of Choa Chu Kang, Choa Chu Kang West & Tengah stations with viaducts for the Jurong Region Line (Contract J102). Recently completed projects by the company include stations such as Promenade & Newton on the Downtown Line and Shenton Way along the Thomson-East Coast Line.
Obayashi has been a little absent from the local rail infrastructure scene in recent years but has completed key stations such as Dhoby Ghaut along the North East Line and Bedok, Kembangan & Outram Park along the East-West Line. The corporation has been more involved in other projects such as Jewel Changi Airport and Duo.

Construction of Turf City station is due to begin in Q3 of the year. During our last visit to the Turf City area, the entire development had been hoarded off with public access no longer possible. With works for the adjacent contract CR202 already being undertaken by the joint venture, work should be able to ramp up pretty quickly for contract CR203.
