Last week, we took a look at the progress of the Cross Island Line (CRL)'s Punggol Extension. This week, we catch up on progress along CRL's phase 1 section, covering 6 contracts under the phase. Join us as we take a look at progress made from Pasir Ris East to Ang Mo Kio in this snapshot update of CRL1.

Tunneling works along the Cross Island Line (CRL)'s phase 1 have been progressing well, thanks to the favourable soil conditions in the eastern side of the island. Soil here is typically composed of old alluvium, great for tunneling as seen through the quick work made of tunnels under several contracts of late.

A happy new year to all our readers & followers! Recently, we have come across a few new images of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the Cross Island Line (CRL) phase 1. Coupled with recent deliveries to sites at Hougang, Ang Mo Kio and Defu, its definitely TBM season for the CRL. What better way to begin the new year than by taking a look at all the machines responsible for building the tunnels for the upcoming CRL1? More of them after the jump.

The site of contract CR116 has been a busy one over the past quarter, with preparation works underway to begin construction at Exit 7 outside AMK Hub. This site has been one of the few that has yet to begin construction in any form while works progressed at the rest of the station site. One of the major observations over the course of the quarter was the slow ramping down of diaphragm walling works on the southern edge of the station as the works approached completion. Join us as we look back on the progress made over the past quarter.

Q1 of 2024 has seen work at Ang Mo Kio station ramping up ahead of more modifications to the existing North-South Line (NSL) station. Diaphragm wall construction work has commenced near the existing NSL station as well, ahead of the planned switch over to diaphragm wall construction along the northern side of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 in the later half of the year.

Over Q3, works have progressed at the Ang Mo Kio station site. Significant progress has been made at the launch shaft site as well as several exit worksites where diaphragm wall excavation works have commenced. Soil treatment work is also being carried out at Exit 8 ahead of excavation there.

Contractor Gammon is not new to the Ang Mo Kio area, having completed the nearby Mayflower station on the Thomson-East Coast Line along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 several years back. For the Cross Island Line (CRL), the contractor is back & teaming up with veteran Bachy Soletanche to undertake contract CR116 for the construction of Ang Mo Kio station and tunnels connecting to Teck Ghee station to the west. Quarter 2 of 2023 has been a busy period for the contractor with works ongoing to prepare the site for the oncoming structural works necessary to build the station. On 19th March, the team took some time to visit a few of the Cross Island Line (CRL) phase 1 sites to check in on how the sites have progressed. Similar to the updates on the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) stages 4 and 5, we hope to do the same for the CRL 1 stations. We've kicked it off with some updates on Hougang and contract CR115's launch shaft, so here's an update for Ang Mo Kio.
Yesterday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) released a video showing a flythrough of the upcoming Tampines North station along the Cross Island Line (CRL) phase 1. LTA has been noticeably more active in uploading videos of & marketing the CRL across its social media channels. In addition to the new video on Tampines North, they also uploaded another video on the Rectangular Tunnel Boring Machine (RTBM) being used at the Teck Ghee station under contract N109A to construct subways to two exits located within Bishan-Ang Mo Kio park.

Contract CR116 is for the construction of Ang Mo Kio interchange with the existing North-South Line (NSL) station and connecting tunnels towards Teck Ghee station. Site clearing is in progress and hoarding has been put up at the work sites for exits 6, 7 and 8. The work sites for exits 5 and 9 have yet to be hoarded up though. As part of the construction work, exits 1 and 2 will be reconfigured, hence a lot of work is taking place within the town garden next to the existing NSL station.
Today, visualizer WW uploaded a new video showing aerial views of how the upcoming Ang Mo Kio Cross Island Line (CRL) station will look like and the manner in which it integrates with the existing town garden & North-South Line (NSL) station. From the video, it appears that the southbound platform of the NSL will see barriers put up to segregate trains from visitors that may be strolling at the park on the roof of the new CRL station exit.

Construction works have come to Ang Mo Kio with site clearing underway. Several amenities, such as the ramp at the nearby HDB blocks and staircases within the Ang Mo Kio Town Garden East have been demolished to make way for construction. Within the existing North-South Line (NSL) station, reconfiguration works have commenced as well.

Recently while searching online, the team came across several renders of the Ang Mo Kio interchange station. As expected, major works are anticipated ahead of the station's construction. Several more exits will be added to the station complex, including a bridge parallel to the existing MRT line that will have active mobility features included.

Today the Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded contract CR116 for the construction of Ang Mo Kio interchange station and associated tunnels. Contract CR116's award is the fifth for the Cross Island Line, following awards for contracts CR105 (Large diameter tunnel between Aviation Park & Loyang), CR112 (Hougang interchange), CR108 (Pasir Ris interchange) and CR101 (Changi East depot).
