CR108 - Pasir Ris update Q1 2024

24 March 2024 - A view westwards from the cut & cover tunnel section east of the main station
box.

The first quarter of the year has seen quite a fair bit of activity at the construction site of Pasir Ris Cross Island Line (CRL) station. Within the first three months, the alignment of Pasir Ris Drive 1 was shifted closer to Costa Ris BTO precinct, the junction of Pasir Ris Drive 1 with Pasir Ris Central & Street 51 was reconfigured and diaphragm wall works outside block 571 saw a road diversion enacted.

CR108 - Pasir Ris Drive 1 closure

1 October 2023 - A view of the section of roadway before closure.

The past several months at contract CR108 were focused on preparations for the big day where the section of Pasir Ris Drive 1 between the junctions with Pasir Ris Central/Street 51 & Pasir Ris Drive 8 would be closed. That day came on the 8th October 2023, a Sunday. Naturally, traffic would be quieter with less vehicles moving about. We visit the site to find out how residents & motorists were coping with the changes.

CR108 - Pasir Ris: The calm before the storm

1 October 2023 - A view eastwards of the section of road that will be closed on 8 October 2023.

This update for Pasir Ris will be a special one covering the progress made over Q3 with a little spillover to October 2023 before the major road closure of a section of Pasir Ris Drive 1 between the junction with Pasir Ris Central & Street 51 and the junction with Pasir Ris Drive 8. The road closure will see the roadway reduced to 2 lanes for traffic exiting Pasir Ris to allow motorists to leave the estate and access the expressway and/or Tampines. As a result, bus services will also be affected and diversions will be in effect when the closure takes place this coming weekend on 8 October.

CR108 - Pasir Ris update Q2 2023

24 June 2023 - A newly expanded ticketing hall at Pasir Ris East-West Line (EWL) station.

"Pasir Ris is one big construction site", was how Member of Parliament Mr. Teo Chee Hean described the ongoing works to build infrastructure to bring more benefits to residents of the town. When passing through Pasir Ris Central, this certainly looks to be the case. The future Pasir Ris Cross Island Line (CRL) station will become the deepest MRT station upon completion - beating out stations such as Raffles Place (the deepest station on the initial 1990's network), Bras Basah, Promenade and Bencoolen - reaching almost 50m deep. Not only is the station the deepest, but the construction site is also likely one of the longest stretching from Sungei Tampines up to the area in front of block 570 along Pasir Ris Drive 1 as there will be crossovers located within cut & cover tunnels on either side of the station. The tunnels to the east especially allow for the tunnels on the lower level connecting the line to Punggol to rise to meet the mainline CRL tunnels.

CRL1 Video directory

Yesterday, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) released a video showing a flythrough of the upcoming Tampines North station along the Cross Island Line (CRL) phase 1. LTA has been noticeably more active in uploading videos of & marketing the CRL across its social media channels. In addition to the new video on Tampines North, they also uploaded another video on the Rectangular Tunnel Boring Machine (RTBM) being used at the Teck Ghee station under contract N109A to construct subways to two exits located within Bishan-Ang Mo Kio park.

CR108 - Pasir Ris 2022 year-end update

16 December 2022 - A view of the existing EWL station and platform extension works.

16 December 2022 - A close up view of the platform extension works to create a replacement
emergency escape stairs to allow the relocation of services & demolition of structures.

Works at Pasir Ris (Central) station are ramping up with diaphragm walling machines visible on site across the contract. In particular, works to construct diaphragm walls are underway for the paid transfer link that will connect to the platform of the existing East-West Line (EWL) station. Low headroom equipment is being used to allow works to continue beneath the existing EWL track viaducts. In view of the tight deadline for the closure of a section of Pasir Ris Drive 1 which runs on top of the station roof slab, works to have diaphragm walls constructed underneath the currently closed section of Pasir Ris Central are being done. Upon their completion, Pasir Ris Central is due to be reopened to provide an alternative route and to allow the closure of Pasir Ris Drive 1.

If last week we had extensive coverage of the Jurong Region Line (JRL), then be prepared for this week's coverage of the Cross Island Line (CRL). In this visit, we explore more of the extensive works under contract CR108 for Pasir Ris station. The works involve building a massive station which will have 2 levels of platforms for the CRL Main line and CRL Punggol Extension (CPE). The station will also connect with the existing East-West Line (EWL) station. Works for the contract also includes the construction of the CRL tunnels eastwards to Pasir Ris East station.

CR108 - Checking in at Pasir Ris

An aerial view of the existing Pasir Ris station with
the Pasir Ris Central worksite.

It's been a few months since we last came by here. Things are definitely ramping up with so much going on at the site. Machines coming in, set up work going on, reconfiguration works and exit & road closures are all in full effect. The construction site can be broken into about 3 smaller zones - along Pasir Ris Drive 8, Pasir Ris Central & Pasir Ris Street 51.

CR108 - New flythrough by LTA

A previously released render of Pasir Ris station.
Source: Aurecon

Today, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) released a new flythrough render of the Pasir Ris Cross Island Line (CRL) station. The flythrough video shows how the station's exits will be located conveniently around the residential neighbourhoods as well as how the new station will connect to the existing East-West Line (EWL) station. Notably, there will be 2 connections - similar to that on the EWL and Circle Line (CCL) at Paya Lebar. Unfortunately though, transfer connections at this station require more level changes than at Paya Lebar due to the deeper CRL station.

CR108 - Viaduct protection works

24 April 2022 - Viaduct protection works at Jurong East

According to a new circular seen, viaduct protection works are to be carried out at both ends of Pasir Ris East-West Line station from 17 May 2022. These will help to facilitate the platform extension works in preparation for converting the station into an interchange with paid links from platform level to the transfer level of the upcoming Cross Island Line station.

Pasir Ris - upcoming works

An overview of construction progress of CRL1 stations as at 15 April 2022.

2022 has been a busy year as all the civil contracts (stations, tunnels & associated infrastructure to run the trains) have been awarded. In total, there were 16 contracts awarded - the first being contract CR105 for the large diameter single bore tunnel between Aviation Park & Loyang stations (08 March 2021) and the latest being contract CR117 for the construction of Bright Hill interchange (30 March 2022). In view that the awarding of contracts took the span of a year to complete, various station sites are at various stages of works.

Recently we came across Ramboll's website which showcased a passenger simulation they had done as a case study. The project was for the Cross Island Line (CRL), presumably Package B of the eastern leg. Some of the details provided were similar to that provided by another company which had also done a passenger traffic simulation study for Punggol station - VertixAP. Along with the case study was a short video showing perspectives of the station.

CPE: First look at the stations

Footprints & renders of the Cross Island Line Punggol Extension stations.
Source: Zaobao SG
The Chinese daily Zaobao has given us a better understanding of the station layouts and how they will look once 2031 comes around. The station footprints - essentially the outlines - can show where the entrances will be located and how long the stations stretch for. As mentioned in our post yesterday, the station outline for Elias station shows that it will be some distance away from the location of Elias Mall. However, the station will feature numerous subways connecting to entrances located nearer to the residential blocks and amenities in the area. Notably for Riviera, there is also some effort put in to ensure that the new station entrances are located closer to the existing LRT station, minimizing exposure of commuters to the weather elements and allowing for smoother connections.

Edited 12 March 2020 - LTA has updated with the official station footprints. We have updated our post to reflect these.

Pre-construction - Pasir Ris

Currently a terminal station serving a single line, the Pasir Ris station will be transformed into a transfer point between the East West Line and upcoming Cross Island Line. This station is also where the Cross Island Line splits between the main line towards Tuas and the branch line towards Punggol. Adopting a stacked station configuration, the main line tracks will occupy the upper platform level while the branch line tracks take up the lower platform level.

CRL1 - Detailed station location maps

During the ministerial visit and announcement at Bright Hill station for Cross Island Line stage 1 (CRL1) this morning, there were no exhibits showing the detailed station location maps for each of the 12 stations along the announced section. Additionally, the Land Transport Authority does not appear to have released such maps either. Instead, we have noted various Members of Parliament have been posting these on their social media platforms. Do have a look at some of the more detailed station location plans we've found and we will continually update on any new maps as we come across them.

Edit @ 1634pm - Defu, Serangoon North & Tavistock station location maps added.

Edit @ 0953am on 26 Jan 19 - Aviation Park, Hougang, Ang Mo Kio, Teck Ghee & Bright Hill station location maps added.
