Brochure for contract CR208's Clementi station. |
A common hot topic question that has been asked many times has been - will Clementi station feature paid transfers between the East-West Line (EWL) and Cross Island Line (CRL)? The answers are simple and yet complex at the same time. If one were to look at the system map, the interchange symbols at Clementi station indicate an integrated interchange that does not require a tap out transfer, unlike those clearly demarcated at Riviera, Tampines, Newton and Bukit Panjang stations. Now that we've gotten that first clue out of the way, we come to the more complex question - how will the paid transfers be done then?

Thankfully, we have some clues that begin to tell the story of how paid transfers will be done at Clementi station. The first comes in the form of recent drawings released. Contract CR208 was recently lauded for its earth control measures (ECM) employed on site. A presentation series to denote the accomplishments was published on The Institution of Engineers, Singapore in November 2024. One of these slides contained a drawing of the site which outlined the station box and some other features. In particular, the features in the drawings around the existing Clementi EWL station may be indicative of some extensive reconfiguration.

These presumptions seem to be further reinforced with the release of new renders showing part of the new Clementi CRL station. With several escalators leading up to the second floor, these would make sense being located next to the existing EWL station with one side meant as a paid transfer connection and the other for an unpaid entry into the CRL station.
While the CRL2 Project Information Centre (PIC) may not be opened yet, part of the Clementi station model can be seen through the fence of the centre. What is clear is that future Exit 4/current Exit B of the station will extend underground. Hence it is extremely likely that the paid transfer will be located here.
To visually represent what we think will take place, we've developed a simple diagram to represent the works taking place at concourse level and street level. A cross section view of the future Exit 4 also provides an idea of how the exit's paid and unpaid sections stack up as well and offers a similar view to the model that will be displayed at the CRL2 PIC in future. Do note that these diagrams do not constitute as official diagrams & should not be viewed as such. The diagrams are developed in-house, based on an educated guess by the team following review of the publicly available information.
There are slight inaccuracies in the diagrams (e.g. layout of stairs & ramps connecting to Exit A/B linkbridges), however as the main objective is to represent the changes that are likely to take place, these inaccuracies are deemed inconsequential to the representation of expected changes to the station.

We hope that the above diagrams would be able to provide you with a better understanding of the changes that we anticipate at Clementi station. As earlier stated though, these diagrams represent an educated guess by the team and have not been confirmed through any publications or official sources as yet. The phasing of works may also differ, based on timelines, cost factors and traffic assessments by consultants. Official information will likely come from project owner Land Transport Authority during or after the CRL2 ground breaking ceremony, which is to be held before the end of the first half of the year. Till then, we await for more official confirmation if the team's educated guesses were correct.
