10 June 2023 - Construction of the capping beam for the launch shaft. |
Contractor Gammon is not new to the Ang Mo Kio area, having completed the nearby Mayflower station on the Thomson-East Coast Line along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 several years back. For the Cross Island Line (CRL), the contractor is back & teaming up with veteran Bachy Soletanche to undertake contract CR116 for the construction of Ang Mo Kio station and tunnels connecting to Teck Ghee station to the west. Quarter 2 of 2023 has been a busy period for the contractor with works ongoing to prepare the site for the oncoming structural works necessary to build the station. We'd like to thank our Instagram follower @linhsu88 for providing us with some images to use in this post as well.

A major part of managing the construction work is also about building strong relationships with the local stakeholders - the residents. Occasionally, contractors are invited to have roadshows to not only educate residents of the ongoing works, but also to network in getting to know the community that the eventual station will serve. Together with representatives from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Residents' Network, the team engages residents, answering questions and explaining what the coming works entail.
It is through such ground work that the project team can understand any issues or difficulties that residents around the work sites face and adjust work practices to better accommodate the needs of their resident neighbours. Such sessions do not only facilitate a one-way download from residents to the project team, but it also allows the residents to become familiar with the members of the project team as well.

Work has been progressing steadily across the various station work sites, of which there are approximately 6 currently. These are located at the contract launch shaft (junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenues 3 & 6), station exit opposite AMK Hub (junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenues 6 & 8), next to the existing NSL station, opposite the existing NSL station and 2 further station exits (near the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 & Street 42 and next to the Ang Mo Kio South NPC).
Diaphragm wall works at the launch shaft area have been completed and ground improvement work was performed to ensure that excavation can proceed stably once the process begins. At the station exit opposite AMK Hub, a hydrofraise machine stands ready to begin diaphragm walling works, while at the remainder of the work sites, preparatory works continued ahead of major soil turning.

Further along the quarter, more equipment has been added to the various work sites. At the launch shaft, works to construct the capping beam are underway. The capping beam serves to top off the diaphragm wall and allows for the installation of some minor fittings such as railings to protect workers on top. Once the capping beam has been completed, excavation is likely to commence.
At the station exit opposite AMK Hub and at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 & Street 42, a clamshell grabber machine has been delivered to both sites each. The machine at the exit opposite AMK Hub was already in use on the day that the photographs were taken and the one at the other site was having some work performed on it. With the diaphragm walls of the station exits beginning to be constructed, it is a matter of time before the rest of the station sites become much more active with earth retaining & stabilising system construction taking place more commonly.
Do stay tuned as we bring you more updates on the progress of construction along the line in time to come.
