"Pasir Ris is one big construction site", was how Member of Parliament Mr. Teo Chee Hean described the ongoing works to build infrastructure to bring more benefits to residents of the town. When passing through Pasir Ris Central, this certainly looks to be the case. The future Pasir Ris Cross Island Line (CRL) station will become the deepest MRT station upon completion - beating out stations such as Raffles Place (the deepest station on the initial 1990's network), Bras Basah, Promenade and Bencoolen - reaching almost 50m deep. Not only is the station the deepest, but the construction site is also likely one of the longest stretching from Sungei Tampines up to the area in front of block 570 along Pasir Ris Drive 1 as there will be crossovers located within cut & cover tunnels on either side of the station. The tunnels to the east especially allow for the tunnels on the lower level connecting the line to Punggol to rise to meet the mainline CRL tunnels.

Southern platform extension
Part of the works involve extending the platform on the southern side of the existing East-West Line (EWL) station. Compared to the previous quarter (Q1 2023), most of the roofing of the extension has been completed. Walls have also gone up to form the structure, with some even painted in a cream tone. There is still more work to be done before the structure can be commissioned to allow the usable space to be utilised while other structures commence on their alterations.

Other station addition & alterations (A&A) works
Beneath the southern platform extension, works have also completed on the expansion of the station ticketing hall. The new area features a wider area for passengers using the ticket machines to queue. Facilities such as restrooms have been relocated outside the station concourse area which allowed some extra room to allow for the widened hall.
Also along the outside of the station, some reconfiguration works have largely been completed to the shop units. The storefronts now feature metal roller shutters as opposed to the glass and metal facades previously installed by operator SMRT's retail arm.

This site at the junction will see some facility buildings located here. The site itself appears to be relatively similar to how it appeared in Q1 2023. However, the alignment of Pasir Ris Drive 1 has shifted slightly with the roadway being diverted a little further south.

Pasir Ris Drive 1 sites west of Pasir Ris MRT station
There has been a fair amount of work taking place along Pasir Ris Drive 1 west of the existing EWL station. Part of the internal roads within HDB precinct Costa Ris have been closed for advanced works ahead of the upcoming closure of Pasir Ris Drive 1. These works will serve to allow utility services to be suitably relocated before the area is converted into a station work site for diaphragm wall works.
While diaphragm wall works are ongoing along the space underneath Pasir Ris Central, other equipment has begun arriving on site. These are likely to be assembled after Pasir Ris Central is re-opened and Pasir Ris Drive 1 closed then converted into a work site.

The site next to Sungei Tampines and south of Pasir Ris Town Park has seen diaphragm walling works commence within the past quarter (Q2 2023). Road diversions of Pasir Ris Drive 1 were also completed within the same period, in addition to the setting up of several more silos on site. Demolition work for existing commuter infrastructure is also being carried out to allow the former roadway to be converted into a work site.

Virtual town hall held by MP Mr. Desmond Tan, Land Transport Authority (LTA) & contractor
In early July, MP for Pasir Ris Central Mr. Desmond Tan held a virtual town hall for residents of Pasir Ris Central to receive updates on the upcoming work activities for the CRL station. The virtual town halls have been a mainstay since the Covid pandemic and allowed residents to connect while working from home or commuting.
One of the more major work activities coming up will be the closure of a section of Pasir Ris Drive 1 from the junction with Pasir Ris Central & Pasir Ris Street 51 to the junction with Pasir Ris Drive 8. This closure will take effect on 5 October 2023. In addition to the road closure, there will be relocation of bus stops to Pasir Ris Central & bus route diversions. However, after discussion and to benefit commuters exiting from Pasir Ris town, LTA & contractor Dongah-Daewoo joint venture have agreed that 2 westbound lanes of Pasir Ris Drive 1 will remain open as a slip road onto Pasir Ris Drive 8 for drivers to access the Tampines Expressway or Tampines Avenue 12. To help, we have come up with a brief table for reference:

LTA will likely release some educational information for road users' & commuters' awareness prior to the road closure in Q4 2023. Till then, we'll keep you updated of any progress at the site in the lead up to the road closure.
