The landscape over at contract CR115 for the construction of Tavistock station and tunnels linking to both Ang Mo Kio & Serangoon North stations has changed dramatically over the last quarter. Trees have been felled to make way for upcoming works while noise barriers have sprung up close to the landed properties and JTC block fronting Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3. In addition, a petrol station at the junction with Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 has been vacated to facilitate the upcoming works.

Former Esso petrol station
In order to make way for Exit 3 of the Tavistock station, the former Esso petrol station located at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 2 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 has since been vacated. Work began this quarter to demolish the structure and create room for contractor Sato Kogyo to begin construction work. Eventually, the site near this location will be used to facilitate tunneling works towards Serangoon North station.

Station box
The station box site has been undergoing preparatory works with infrastructure (e.g. bus stops, street furniture) and trees, shrubs & vegetation being removed. Other construction infrastructure has taken its place with the installation of several stretches of high noise barriers in progress. Road work has also been ongoing in preparation of upcoming road diversions. In fact, by Q3 2023 some of the lanes have been since shifted. Such a phenomenon has been described by Senior Minister of State for Transport, Ms. Amy Khor, during a visioning session conducted for the nearby North-South Corridor (NSC), which is also seeing similar works take place.

Intermediate launch shaft
Works on the diaphragm walls for the intermediate launch shaft have commenced this past quarter. To facilitate the works, the roadway was diverted closer to the HDB blocks on the northern edge and infrastructure along the former alignment of the roadway demolished. Once the site was cleared, work began on excavation of the diaphragm walls a panel at a time. During our visit, approximately 3 machines were being used to construct various panels.
Once excavation of the diaphragm walls are completed, work will begin on excavation of the shaft downwards. This will eventually be covered by an acoustic shed which aims to reduce both noise and light pollution by containing both within the enclosure. Additional noise mitigation measures that have been put in place are the construction of high noise barriers as well as the boxing up of noisy machinery with noise insulation panels.
Upon completion of the launch shaft, tunneling works will begin with the launching of tunnel boring machines (TBMs). These machines will first begin construction of the tunnel linking Ang Mo Kio station to the west. Once that stretch has been completed, the machines will be disassembled and put back together in the same starting shaft again. However, this time, the machines will begin tunneling in the opposite direction towards Tavistock station across the expressway. A process called tunneling through will be done as the station box will not be fully excavated at the time when the TBMs tunnel through. During this process, temporary tunnel rings will be installed for removal later on, when excavation reaches the platform level. At the other end of Tavistock station, a feeder shaft will take over support duties by supplying tunnel ring segments to the TBMs and allowing the removal of excavated soil.
Do stay tuned for more updates on the progress of the Cross Island Line's construction.
