CR116 - Ang Mo Kio update Q2 2024

20 June 2024 - A view of heavy machinery on the south side of the station in end-Q2.

The site of contract CR116 has been a busy one over the past quarter, with preparation works underway to begin construction at Exit 7 outside AMK Hub. This site has been one of the few that has yet to begin construction in any form while works progressed at the rest of the station site. One of the major observations over the course of the quarter was the slow ramping down of diaphragm walling works on the southern edge of the station as the works approached completion. Join us as we look back on the progress made over the past quarter.

Paid transfer connection to North-South Line (NSL) station, Exits 1, 2 & 6
This section of the station occupies the area south of the Ang Mo Kio Town Garden (East) and has been home to the betonite silos. Over the past quarter, the first phase of diaphragm wall works for the paid connection, Exit 2 & Exit 6 appear to have been completed.

Existing NSL station works
As part of the upgrade of the existing Ang Mo Kio NSL station, major addition & alteration works need to be carried out to modify the layout of the station. Part of these works saw the closure of Exit D to be reconfigured into Exit 2 and part of the paid transfer link to the new Cross Island Line (CRL) station. A detour to the station's toilets was set up, cutting through the existing paid area of the concourse, separated only by temporary metal barricades.

Intermediate Launch Shaft 1
Tunneling works also form part of the contract, linking Ang Mo Kio station with Teck Ghee station to the west. An intermediate launch shaft is located at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenues 3 & 6, near block 324. According to contractor Gammon-Bachy Soletanche, excavation works for the launch shaft were expected to be completed around July.

Exits 7 & 8
The pair of exits will be located across Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 from the existing NSL station and viaduct. Through the past quarter, preparatory works for the site of Exit 7 which will be located directly outside AMK Hub can be clearly seen. The large trees slowly disappeared over the course of the quarter, leaving the area slightly more bare and exposed. Eventually the covered linkway too will disappear when construction of the new exit commences with hacking works likely to be the first activity to commence.

Across the road lies Exit 8, which had previously completed the first phase of diaphragm wall works. We understand that a small section of the diaphragm wall was left to be completed after some utility diversion works were finished. This would allow for a mined subway tunnel to be constructed from the main station box, located east of the NSL viaducts, to connect with the exits on the western side.

Exit 10
The site for Exit 10 and its associated subway is located at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 and Street 42. With Street 42 having been diverted for some time now, soil improvement works began at the start of the quarter. Towards the end of the quarter, excavation work began at the site.

On the contract's official Telegram channel, the contractor updated that diaphragm walling works along the station's southern edge were completed at the end of July 2024. With that, preparation works can be expected to take place over the third quarter of the year to begin the process of diverting the roadway closer to the southern side so that diaphragm wall works can commence on the station's northern edge.
