July was a momentous month for the Cross Island Line (CRL). All civil contracts for the construction of stations across phases 1, 2 and the Punggol extension were awarded. Along phase 1, several contracts were in the midst of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) assembly and subsequent launch as well. In this update, we take a brief look at the progress made across the line's first few phases.
Phase 1
Tunneling works are beginning for the construction of the first phase of the line. We understand that the majority of tunneling works are anticipated to be completed by about 2027, with most contracts beginning tunneling in 2024 and a handful in 2025. TBM assembly works can be seen taking place at various different contracts along the phase. Meanwhile, diaphragm wall works were progressing at various station along the route, with certain contracts reaching milestones of having these works completed for certain sections.
Tunnels between Aviation Park station & Changi East depot (Contract CR102)
In a nutshell: TBM assembly was being done at the launch shaft for the contract. At least two TBMs were noted within the shaft.
CR3 - Loyang (Contract CR106)
In a nutshell: The launch shaft for the contract continued with excavation work, being constructed by neighbouring contract CR107 at Pasir Ris East station site. Soil investigation was also being carried out along the tunnel alignment. Tunneling work is expected to commence in 2025.

CR5 | CP1 - Pasir Ris (Contract CR108)
In a nutshell: At the western end of the station, works were focused on the installation of the traffic decking that will see the westbound carriageway of Pasir Ris Drive 1 shifted northwards to allow for construction works to begin on the southern side of the road for the tunnel diaphragm walls. Construction of the diaphragm walls continued in the main station box area as well as the cut & cover tunnels to the eastern end. Tunneling work by TBMs is expected to kick off in 2025.

CR6 - Tampines North (Contract CR109)
In a nutshell: With the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) being launched last month, the northern launch shaft near the Tampines Expressway (TPE) has been busy. The gantry crane was moving about a fair bit on the day of visit to the site, likely supplying tunnel segments to the machine for its initial drive. Over on the other end of the site, excavation works continued at the southern launch shaft and the cut & cover tunnel area, with struts being installed ahead of excavation work.

Punggol Extension
Work on the Punggol Extension is gaining momentum with all four sites of the project well into works for the line. Diaphragm wall works have begun under all three contracts. Tunneling works along this phase of the line are anticipated to be completed by 2028.
CP2 – Elias (Contract P102)
In a nutshell: The site is fully cleared and the site offices have been completed. Diaphragm wall works were underway for the launch shaft where a single Earth Pressure Balance TBM will be launched through 2 drives for tunneling works towards Pasir Ris station.

Phase 2
Works along phase 2 of the line continue to ramp up with the award of all civil contracts for the stations completed. Towards the end of the month, the contract for CR211 was finally awarded, leaving one final civil contract (CR207) for the construction of tunnels between Clementi and Maju stations to be awarded. Various works are taking place at the different station sites along the route, with the most obvious progress seen at Clementi.
CR15 – King Albert Park (Contract CR205)
In a nutshell: Works are still largely confined to soil testing, strengthening and investigative works, with test piles being built to verify the intended design. In the coming months, site clearing is expected along with the erection of hoarding around the site.

In a nutshell: Demolition of the former Clementi Neighbourhood Police Centre & Clementi Police Division Headquarters has made headway with the building almost completely obliterated. Works now appear to shift to the demolition of the building's basement. Also visible on site was the first auger machine, likely to facilitate the construction of a test pile to verify the intended design strength before major construction proceeds. The site office which will also house the phase's Project Information Centre had also made steady headway.
