We have a quick update on some developments along the Cross Island Line (CRL) to share: The launch of contract CR211's Telegram channel & TBM #1 for contract CR115 and confirmed names of the tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for contract CR112. More information after the jump.

Contract CR112 Telegram channel
Telegram channels have been set up for most contracts for the CRL to update stakeholders around the various projects of upcoming activities that may affect them. This method of engagement first began to be used after the Covid pandemic where more traditional engagement methods could not be implemented as easily (e.g. circulars, in-person door-to-door chats). These new forms of communication allowed the Land Transport Authority (LTA) & contractors to provide more current updates and be more effective in their outreach efforts.

As such, each contract under new rail lines typically feature an individual Telegram channel. Under CRL2, such channels have been established for contracts CR202 (large diameter bored tunnel under the CCNR), CR205 (King Albert Park station), CR206 (Maju station), CR208 (Clementi station) and CR209 (West Coast station). Contract CR211 is the latest addition with the channel being officially launched today. Do scan the QR code or click on the link to join the group for updates.

Contract CR115 - Tunneling launch ceremony
Over in the first phase of the line, tunneling works are beginning for another contract. Such works were already underway for contracts CR102 (tunnels from Changi East to the CRL depot & Aviation Park station), CR105 (tunnels from Aviation Park station to Loyang station) and CR109 (Tampines North station to Pasir Ris station). The latest to join these would be contract CR115 for the construction of Tavistock station.

On the 20th September, a ceremony was held to mark the commencement of these works. From a launch shaft constructed along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, next to Teck Ghee Park, the first TBM will begin constructing the tunnel for the future eastbound track towards Ang Mo Kio station. It is expected that the current machine will be used to bore the second tunnel connecting to Ang Mo Kio once the current tunnel has been completed. A further two machines are likely to join the current machine but will be used to tunnel the longer drive towards Serangoon North station. As Tavistock station is unlikely to see excavation works commence soon, the TBMs will need to tunnel through the station with temporary tunnel rings that will eventually be taken apart to allow trains to call at the station's platform when works are completed.

Contract CR112 - TBM names finalised
Recently, contractor Samsung Construction E&C sought for stakeholders' input in naming the TBMs for the contract on 12th September. 2 machines will be used to bore tunnels connecting to Serangoon North station. Options for TBM#1 were Hera or Artermis and for TBM#2 were Valkyrie or Queen Seondeok. Ultimately, the votes decided on Artemis & Valkyrie and were announced on the contract's Telegram channel on 25th September.
