It has been some time since we caught up and provided more detailed updates on the construction of some Cross Island Line (CRL) stations. We'll start off with some updates on Hougang, seeing how there has been an increase in activity over the past 2 months with the assembly and subsequent launching of the Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) at the station site. More details after the jump!

Tunneling works commence
In mid-December 2024, two TBMs were lowered into the launch shaft at the northern end of the station, one after another. The TBMs will be constructing twin tube tunnels running westwards and connect to the neighbouring Serangoon North station.

Following the lifting of the TBMs into the launch shaft, the next month was taken to assemble the various components within. This included welding together the various shields and connecting the front portion together with the back up gantries. Other supporting equipment at ground level was installed and commissioned as well, such as the condenser fans and grouting plant. On 24 January 2025, a ceremony was held on site to mark the launch of the first TBM. Once the first TBM has made some headway and a sufficient gap has been attained, the second TBM will follow suit.

Interior works within Hougang NEL
As Hougang will serve as an interchange station, allowing passengers to transfer from the CRL to the North East Line (NEL) and vice-versa, modification works need to be done within the existing Hougang station to facilitate these connections. These works include reconfiguring existing access and the construction & installation of additional means of vertical circulation to cope with the increased passenger loads. In mid-January, workers were seen using tape to create markings at the platform level of the existing NEL station. By the end of the month, the resultant markings could be seen, likely indicating the outline of hoarding yet to be installed.

13 January 2025 - Workers busy using tape to create markings on the
platform of the NEL station.

29 January 2025 - Markings in tape at the lift landing at concourse level.

29 January 2025 - The final markings on the platform level. These markings likely indicate the
location of upcoming hoarding to be installed. The squares will probably be where supporting
metal columns will be installed, upon which plywood will be mounted.

Diaphragm wall works
The diaphram wall construction for the CRL station is being completed over several phases. The first part was largely completed prior to the road diversion that was enacted in August 2024 for phase 2 of the construction works. This allowed for works to take place between both bounds of Hougang Central. As of January 2025, no hydrofraise machines can be seen on site which would indicate the completion of works in the current site. It is likely that the eastbound lane of Hougang Central will be shifted further south to make way for the final section of Exit 6's subway's diaphragm wall construction and the connecting transfer link between the NEL and CRL stations.

29 August 2024 - The westbound lanes of Hougang Central were shifted southwards to allow
for the creation of a construction work zone in the road median. Diaphragm wall construction
for Exit 6's subway began here.

31 August 2024 - Equipment for diaphragm wall construction on site following the road diversion.

31 January 2025 - Equipment for the construction of diaphragm walls was no longer present on site.

31 August 2024 - A closer view of the equipment for diaphragm wall construction on site, nearer to
the location of the future Exit 6.

31 January 2025 - The same site with equipment notably not present on site.

31 August 2024 - A hydrofraise machine on site in the middle section of the station. This will be
the merging point for the paid transfer link with the CRL station and also where the Exit 6 subway
diverges from the main CRL station box.

31 August 2024 - Hydrofraise machine and rebar cages for diaphragm wall construction on site in
the road median, following the road diversion.

31 January 2025 - The hydrofraise machine is now notably absent from the site.

31 January 2025 - Low walls with concrete poured undergoing curing. The eastbound lanes of
Hougang Central may be diverted southwards, over the newly poured roof slab in the current work
site to allow for construction of the diaphragm walls beneath the location of the lanes currently.

We hope that this short update has provided some information on the progress of works over at Hougang station. In time to come, we'll do a more detailed update to capture the progress of works as they unfold. Till then, do stay tuned for our continued updates on the other sections of the CRL coming soon.

This post will be available on Instagram & Facebook on 7 February 2025.
