N109A - New video on construction works

Last week, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) released a video on the construction works on-going for Teck Ghee MRT station. Works at Teck Ghee have been going-on for some time now owing to the complexity of the site due to the Cross Island Line (CRL) station being co-located underneath the upcoming North South Expressway tunnels. As such, construction works for the station were tendered under the North South Corridor project as opposed to being awarded with the rest of the CRL contracts. Consequentially, the works have progressed the furthest along as well. However, as the video for Teck Ghee station was uploaded on the same day as another video featuring Ang Mo Kio station, most viewers seem to have missed out on this video in particular.

The video explains in particular the works that are currently going on at the site, as opposed to the entire construction sequence from start to completion. Works at the site are focused on the construction of the earth retaining & stabilizing system (ERSS) which is built using the secant bored piles method explained in the video.

Contract N109A was awarded to Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co (STEC) for the construction of the North South Expressway tunnels, including the Teck Ghee station and CRL tunnels between Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 and Sin Ming Avenue. The expressway tunnels will likely be located atop the CRL station, similar to the arrangement at Rochor station on the Downtown Line where expressway tunnels were constructed together with the station in advance.

Once the ERSS works have been completed with the installation of all piles along the perimeter of the site, the next step will be to proceed to excavation. It is highly likely that a top-down approach will be utilized where the top-most layer of the permanent structure is to be excavated and cast before works proceed further down. This approach provides further stability in view of the close proximity to neighbouring high-rise Housing Development Board apartments.

The video released by LTA has provided viewers with much information of the construction activities that are currently taking place. These videos are likely produced by the contractor as part of their bid and outreach efforts which may be shown during townhall discussions held online for residents. It will be good if the videos could provide a little context, such as that these are currently on-going works and that a subsequent update will be given when works are about to progress to the next stage. Nonetheless, the uploading of such videos is a commendable effort by LTA in its outreach efforts. We look forward to more such videos! Meanwhile, if you happen to pass by the construction sites, do drive, ride or walk through safely.
