CR113 - Serangoon North update Q3 2023

21 September 2023 - A view of the station site at the town centre of Serangoon North. Exit 1
will be located there.

The major change that took place over the past quarter was the commencement of diaphragm wall excavation at the Exit 1 site. Located right smack in the heart of the town centre, this will be the site of the main station entrance. Formerly some pile load testing was conducted here before the betonite silos moved in. Subsequently, a hydrofraise machine was also brought in to begin set up. Excavation for the diaphragm wall panels has since begun in Q3 2023.

Further along towards the eastern end of the station is Exit 4, which is located adjacent to Bowen Secondary School. The work site here has made progress with noise barriers being installed and a road diversion implemented. Across the road from the school, work is being carried out with the installation of sheet piles - this may potentially be used as a retaining wall to divert the roadway for the excavation of the station box and mined subway. Over at other sites, preparation has also been carried out ahead of the commencement of diaphragm walling works.

July 2023
A pedestrian overhead bridge located along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 had been replaced with a street-level, signalised crossing and the main spans of the bridge had been removed in the previous quarter. However, the ramps and staircases that served as access points still remained on site. Preparation works could be seen taking place over at the Exit 1 site.

August 2023
In the middle of the quarter is when the works really began hitting their strides. Road diversion work was visible over at Exit 4 on the eastern end of the station. A launch shaft will be constructed here, after the site takes over the area occupied by the existing roadway, from which micro tunnel boring machines will assist to dig out the outline of a subway that will connect the exit to the station box under Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.

Over at the western end, the Exit 1 site was about ready but lacking the hydrofraise machine to begin its work on excavating the diaphragm walls. Guide walls were under construction over at the Exit 2 site ahead of anticipated commencement of diaphragm wall work here as well.

September 2023
At the eastern end of the site at Exit 4, the road diversion was successfully implemented. With the diversion in place, the work site could be pushed out further, allowing sufficient space for the launch shaft to be constructed. Over at the retaining wall site across Yio Chu Kang Road, the soil between the sheet piles had since been compacted, allowing for heavy equipment to use the site as an access platform from which secant bored piles can be constructed. This would allow for the construction of a retaining wall that would allow the existing slip road to be diverted away from its current position, providing the contractor more room for the construction of the station box and other supporting infrastructure.

Further west, new areas had been hoarded up and taken over, such as the area near the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 & Serangoon North Avenue 3. This is where Exit 3 will be sited, just across the road from Exit 1. The progress within this newly hoarded up site is thus naturally slower. At the Exit 1 site itself, the hydrofraise machine was now present and ready to commence diaphragm wall works.

Despite contract CR113 being a contract for the construction of Serangoon North station only, the entire area is a hive of activity. In Q4, we expect that diaphragm wall works will commence at several sites simultaneously to quicken the pace of construction of the earth retaining & stabilising system. We'll continue to update on the progress at the sites so do stay tuned for these.
