CR112 - Hougang interchange flythrough

The Land Transport Authority this morning released a new video flythrough of Hougang interchange station. The overview shows how the new Cross Island Line (CRL) station will connect with the existing North East Line (NEL) station through a new paid transfer link as well as new exits, including a co-located exit at the current exit A.

Kindly note that this post is extremely image-heavy.

4 new exits
A new station box with an additional 4 exits is coming to Hougang. Located underneath the existing Hougang Central bus interchange and Hougang Central (Minor), the station will have exits at the bus interchange, along Hougang Central (Major), Hougang Central (Minor) & Hougang Avenue 10.

Upper Concourse (B2)
The CRL station will feature a split level concourse over 2 levels at B2 and B3. The upper concourse allows commuters to connect to exits 4, 5 & 6 from the lower levels.

Platforms (B5)
This will be the deepest level in the entire interchange complex at B5. The station will consist of a simple island platform serving 2 tracks. The colour scheme thus far has suggested that the station is attempting to follow the colour scheme of the existing NEL station.

Paid connection to NEL
The new expanded station will feature a paid connection with approximately 6 escalators to whisk commuters between lines. Alternatively, commuters may use these to cross between station complexes to access other exits during inclement weather as well.

Modifications to the NEL station
As part of works to convert the station into an interchange, the concourse level of the existing NEL station will be reconfigured. Most of the open atrium between the existing escalators will be slabbed over to allow for an additional 2 pairs of additional escalators to be installed, 1 each on either side of the lift.

We also understand that the Hougang and Kovan stations were built with certain ends of the stations having a single escalator connecting the platform and concourse levels (Exit A end at Hougang & Exit C end at Kovan). However, there are provisions to allow for a future escalator to be installed when demand warrants. For Hougang, the upgrading of the station from one serving a single line to an interchange station warrants the installation of the additional escalator at Exit A.

Lastly, we also understand that there are plans to introduce an additional lift between platform and concourse at the NEL station as well. These will be major changes that will be implemented to allow sufficient space for the anticipated transfers and increase in footfall at the NEL station.
