Contract CR101 & CR102 are included & essential for the construction of Cross Island Line (CRL) phase 1. The first of the 2 contracts involves the construction of the Changi East Depot while the second will see the construction of tunnels from the depot and linking to both Aviation Park station & the future Changi Airport Terminal 5.
Changi East Depot
Located along Tanah Merah Coast & Aviation Park Roads, the site has been cleared from a greenfield area. The depot will be responsible for maintenance and stabling of the trains for CRL, especially during the initial years as the only depot capable of serving CRL1, CRL2 & the Cross Island Line Punggol Extension (CPE). An operations control centre will also be built on site. Eventually this depot will be joined by a further depot in the west at the end of CRL3, however that depot is likely to only come online towards the mid-2030's.
Hoarding has gone up and some machinery has moved in to begin ground work. Most of the large site is quiet however with only a sole crane noted to be lowering a rebar cage for foundation works during the visit.

Tunnels from Aviation Park to Changi East Depot & Terminal 5
Contract CR102 will see the construction of approximately 4 tunnels that form a T-junction between Aviation Park station, Changi East depot & a future spur that will link to the line's eventual terminus at Terminal 5. From Aviation Park, two outer-most tracks will connect with the Changi East depot, allowing trains to enter or leave service on the line.
The 2 inner-most tracks will swing southwards to connect with the future Terminal 5 station. Lastly, a third track will emerge between the two mainline tracks on their southern run to Terminal 5 that will connect with the other 2 tracks heading further east towards the Changi East depot. It is expected that there will be approximately 3 shafts for this contract to launch and retrieve the tunnel boring machines required for all the construction.
A large number of machines have been assembled on site to carry out various construction activities. There are cranes on site that will help with lifting, diaphragm wall cutters that will help to excavate panels for the retaining walls at the launch & retrieval shafts and also deep soil mixing machines that will help to mix the soil with chemicals to increase its strength & stability.

We hope that you've had a great start to the year and that this year may bring you good fortune, health & joy. It can be expected that works will ramp up at these 2 construction projects through the year with foundation works at the depot site being carried out & diaphragm wall works commencing for the tunneling project.
Do stay tuned as we continue to update through the course of the year on various rail construction projects, including finishing up the 2022 wrap up through the coming week of the new year.
