CRL - A snapshot in April 2024

Overview of CRL1 stations CR4 - CR13 as of April 2024.
Top (L - R): CR4 - Pasir Ris East, CR5 - Pasir Ris, CR6 - Tampines North
Middle (L - R): CR7 - Defu, CR8 - Hougang, CR9 - Serangoon North
Bottom (L-R): CR10 - Tavistock, CR11 - Ang Mo Kio, CR13 - Bright Hill

We're pretty much done with April of 2024 - what a quick first third of the year it has been! Things are quickly becoming serious over along the Cross Island Line (CRL)'s first phase of 12 stations stretching from Aviation Park to Bright Hill with tunnel boring machines (TBMs) being delivered to site and lowered into launch shafts, station box excavation starting and bored piling continuing. We'll do a brief overview of the CRL1 stations as of the end of April 2024. More after the jump!

CR4 - Pasir Ris East (Contract CR107)
In a nutshell: Excavation has commenced at the eastern end of the station for the section connecting to the ventilation building. At the same time, works are underway for the launch shaft which will be handed over to contract CR106 to facilitate tunneling works towards Loyang station.

CR5 | CP1 - Pasir Ris (Contract CR108)
In a nutshell: Diaphragm walling works are in full swing along Pasir Ris Drive 1 which has seen numerous traffic diversions. Preparation work is underway to swing the road closer to the north to begin diaphragm walling works along the southern edge of the former alignment of the road. This means that there will likely be a wide road median with the work site located between the two carriageways.

CR6 - Tampines North (Contract CR109)
In a nutshell: Heavy duty cranes are on site to lower the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) into the northern launch shaft. The machine will be used to construct the tunnels towards Pasir Ris station further east. A gantry crane has been installed near this launch shaft to facilitate tunneling works once the TBM has been installed.

Large diameter bored tunnels – Eastern shaft (Contract CR110)
In a nutshell: Gantry cranes have been installed at the eastern launch shaft which abuts the Paya Lebar Air Base (PLAB). It is from here that a large diameter TBM will be launched for its drive towards Defu station. As there is to be a future CRL station located within the PLAB premises that will be developed in the future, there will be two provisional junction points in the tunnel to allow the tracks to diverge and converge on either side of the future station.

Large diameter bored tunnels – Western shaft (Contract CR110)
In a nutshell: Diaphragm walling works are in progress at the western shaft under contract CR110. This is where the tracks will converge when a second tunnel is constructed as part of the future station's construction. The presence of a second tunnel will allow flexibility in the future station's design to use a single tunnel concept, similar to stations along the CRL's Punggol Extension, or allow the future station to adopt an island platform configuration. Nonetheless, rebar cage installation as well as panel excavation works can be seen taking place here.

CR7 - Defu (Contract CR111)
In a nutshell: Contract CR111 has several worksites which are currently active. While the main station site is located underneath Tampines Road, a secondary site along Upper Serangoon Road was being prepared. This will be the location of an electrical sub-station that is part of the line's supporting infrastructure. A 12 metre high noise barrier was in the process of being installed on site before further excavation works take place. At the station site itself, work has been ongoing to put a road diversion into effect. In this diversion, the eastbound carriageway will be shifted to run next to the diverted westbound carriageway, allowing for works to be conducted at the northern edge unimpeded.

CR8 - Hougang (Contract CR112)
In a nutshell: The work site at the northern half of the station is being expanded, possibly to support the upcoming tunneling works and provide space for the staging of TBMs and tunnel ring segments. Within the northern half, excavation for part of the station box has also reached the roof slab level. Works were ongoing to lay the formwork ahead of rebar installation above. Over at Exit 6, backfilling over the completed portion of the roof slab was done. Hougang Central may be diverted on top of this section to allow diaphragm wall works to continue for the rest of the subway that will connect to the station.

Over at the southern half of the station box site, diaphragm wall works have been largely completed. The number of machines digging diaphragm walls here has been reduced to a single machine. Part of the cut & cover trench has commenced excavation work as well. Within the existing Hougang North East Line station, several cladding panels at the concourse level have been removed. This may be part of works to identify utilities and examine the existing condition of the structure ahead of slab expansion works to fit in additional escalators and lifts.

CR9 - Serangoon North (Contract CR113)
In a nutshell: Diaphragm wall works have been completed at Exits 1 and 2 of the station, with the machines being redeployed to other locations along the site. Works are concentrated along the northern edge of the station. The slip road from Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 to Yio Chu Kang Road was meant to be diverted at the end of the month, however this has been delayed to May instead. Work is still ongoing with the construction of the embankment supporting the diverted roadway.

Closer to the The Serangoon Community Club, tree felling has been conducted to clear the site ahead of diaphragm walling works for Exit 5.

CR10 - Tavistock (Contract CR115)
In a nutshell: The biggest noticeable change at the contract CR115 work site is the delivery of the TBM components to the launch shaft at Teck Ghee Park. One machine has been delivered thus far and will be assembled ahead of tunneling works commencing in Q3 2024. Across the Central Expressway, work is focused on constructing the diaphragm walls for the station along its southern edge.

CR11 - Ang Mo Kio (Contract CR116)
In a nutshell: Work is in the final stages of diaphragm wall construction along the station's southern edge before swinging over to focus on the northern side. When the diaphragm wall works on the southern edge complete at the end of the month or in early-May, there will be some road diversions to push the roadway closer to the south in order to free up space on the northern side for diaphragm walling works.

Contractor Bachy Soletanche has updated that excavation works are ongoing for the launch shaft located at a former empty field near the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenues 3 and 6. Currently, the team has reached ring beam level 5. It will still require another 3 months of effort before the base level is reached by the team. Over at the Ang Mo Kio station, modification works were carried out ahead of Exit D's closure. This includes creating a separate unpaid area walkway that cuts through the station's concourse paid area in order to maintain access to the public restrooms.

CR12 - Teck Ghee (Contract N109A)
In a nutshell: Work is still focused on the western half of the station box and expressway tunnel trench. With backfilling works ongoing, it appears that the roadway will be shifted above the backfilled portion of soil. Thereafter, work on the earth retaining & stabilising structures (ERSS) will begin on the eastern side of the site. The process has taken quite a while and will likely take another full year or more before the entire ERSS works for the site are completed. Concurrently, excavation work can commence for the expressway tunnel level as the roof slab has been cast allowing for work to progress below using a top-down method.

CR13 - Bright Hill (Contract CR117)
In a nutshell: As the last awarded civil contract for CRL1, it is understandable that progress at Bright Hill station may not be as far along as compared to some of the other station sites along the line. Bored piling works are ongoing as part of the ERSS works. Progress at the site has been impacted occasionally due to supply issues with concrete production due to high demand. The majority of the casting works thus far have been restricted to either end of the station with the middle section not yet undergoing casting works.

It appears that a TBM launch shaft is being cast at the eastern end of the site although it has been difficult finding a vantage point that allows a clear, unobstructed view of the works progress here.
