Another week, and another month goes by. We're now clearly heading towards the middle of the year with June underway. Here's a look back at the progress made at the various Cross Island Line station sites in May 2024. There's a bit more to see now that some of the Tunnel Boring Machines are in the ground and beginning their boring journeys through the east to construction the line.

Phase 1
Work here is at varying stages, with most sites still focusing on diaphragm wall construction across various sites. Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) were received at some sites, with some even being lowered into their respective launch shafts ahead of the commencement of tunneling works.

CR3 - Loyang (Contract CR106)
In a nutshell: We did not manage to pop by the Loyang station site this month, however works at Pasir Ris East station's east end involve the construction of the contract's launch shaft. Upon completion, the shaft will be handed over to Woh Hup, contractor for contract CR106 which is in charge of Loyang station. The launch shaft was in the early stages of construction, with the top slab currently cast while works are underway to build up the rebar for the subsequent layer ahead of slab casting, at the time of visit.

CR4 - Pasir Ris East (Contract CR107)
In a nutshell: The contract for this station only involves the construction of the station box with no associated tunnels involved. As such, work continues on the construction of the diaphragm walls which will form the perimeter of the station ahead of its excavation.

CR5 | CP1 - Pasir Ris (Contract CR108)
In a nutshell: Preparation was underway for a road diversion of Pasir Ris Drive 1, which was implemented towards the end of the month. The diversion created a work space between the two carriageways to allow for diaphragm wall construction work to begin on the southern side of the cut & cover tunnels to the east of the station box. Work on diaphragm walls continued at the station box too.

CR6 - Tampines North (Contract CR109)
In a nutshell: With both tunnel boring machines (TBMs) lowered into the northern launch shaft, the crane used to lower the machines in was removed from site. A second gantry crane had arrived at the launch shaft but was yet to be set up. It will take some time for the team to commission the TBMs, which should be ready to begin tunneling works towards Pasir Ris station in about a month or two. At the other end of the station, work continues at the southern launch shaft. In between the two shafts, excavation work was ongoing for the station box and cut & cover tunnels.

CR7 - Defu (Contract CR111)
In a nutshell: At the station's western end, work to excavate the launch shaft was ongoing. A few openings at the shaft will allow for TBMs to be lowered nearest to the entry wall where they will begin boring tunnels towards Hougang station. Further along the shaft, the diaphragm walls are braced apart by struts installed to prevent excessive movement. Diaphragm wall works continue at the rest of the work site.

CR8 - Hougang (Contract CR112)
In a nutshell: A large portion of land adjacent to the station box has been occupied by the contractor and the site is being prepared. After being levelled off, a layer of crushed stone was added upon which rebar was laid and concrete poured to provide a level surface for future construction works. The team anticipates that this area will be used to facilitate tunneling works with tunnel ring segments and TBM parts to be stored here, in close proximity to the launch shaft. Diaphragm wall construction works for Exit 5, which made news in the earlier part of the year for causing disturbance to residents nearby, appear to have since been completed. Elsewhere, excavation works for the station box and paid transfer linkway had commenced. Backfilling works over a portion of the subway connecting to Exit 6 was in progress, to allow diaphragm wall works to begin to connect the exit with the station box proper.

CR9 - Serangoon North (Contract CR113)
In a nutshell: Traffic over the slip road connecting Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 with Yio Chu Kang Road has been diverted over the temporary embankment that was constructed, to allow for construction of the reception shaft for the mined underpass connecting Exit 4 with the station box. Diaphragm wall construction continues along the northern edge of the station.

In a nutshell: Work continued on the station box's diaphragm wall along the southern edge. Exit D of the existing North-South Line station was closed to integrate the paid transfer link and future exits of the station. Tree felling works commenced for Exit 7 in preparation for construction work beginning.

CR12 – Teck Ghee (Contract N109A)
In a nutshell: Ahead of an upcoming road diversion, which will see lane reduction of Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 from 3 lanes to 2 lanes per carriageway, work was being carried out to prepare the site for the shift in road alignment. This diversion would allow for work on the station's eastern half to commence on the earth retaining & stabilising structures. On the southern side of the station, work continued on the bored pile excavation & construction. Within Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, excavation work had started for one of the pits where a Rectangular TBM will be used to construct subways connecting the station with an exit.

Phase 2
Besides work on the first phase of the line, construction is also beginning at the first two contracts awarded under phase two. King Albert Park and Clementi stations are currently in the site preparation phase with works underway to prepare the site for actual construction such as site clearing and soil investigation taking place.

CR15 – King Albert Park (Contract CR205)
In a nutshell: Work has been underway for the construction of the project's site office thus far, with the temporary building beginning to take shape. Several piles were also in the midst of being tested on site while soil investigation works were being carried out in the dense vegetation that would eventually be cleared away.

CR17 – Clementi (Contract CR208)
In a nutshell: With the carpark and former HDB blocks now gone, work at Clementi has focused on building the temporary site offices for the project. The entire area from block 324 up to Clementi Avenue 4, underneath which the station will be located is dedicated to the work site, only bisected by the existing covered linkway. Hoarding has also begun to go up around the site which will likely be used partially for diverted utilities and potentially road diversions while the station is being constructed.
