CR209 - Demolition of Tanglin Secondary School building

Secondary School buildings.

Contract CR209 for the construction of West Coast station and tunnels connecting to Clementi station was the fourth civil contract awarded for phase 2 of the Cross Island Line (CRL2), following the awards for the large diameter single bored tunnel across the Central Catchment Nature Reserve (contract CR202), King Albert Park station (contract CR205) and Clementi station (contract CR208). Together with the latter two, work was anticipated to begin in Q1 2024. The initial works that began last quarter were site preparation works, such as pre-condition surveys of surrounding buildings and capturing drone footage before any work began proper.

As of Q2 of the year, work to demolish the former Tanglin Secondary School buildings has begun. Heavy machinery can be seen on site, where the school's field used to be located. These machines - an auger machine, a crawler crane and a mobile crane - may be used for the conduct of pile tests as the field is an ideal location to conduct such activities being devoid of buildings, allowing easy access to the ground to be used for the station's construction eventually.

The former school buildings are slowly being consumed by the scaffolding ahead of advanced demolition work. This process may take several months and will likely be completed by the end of the year. As part of demolition works, the school buildings' foundations will also need to be removed before work can begin on station construction.
