It's been a while since we stopped by Hougang to check on progress. Things are going well and the station is one of the quickest in terms of progress. Diaphragm walling works are well underway with 2 machines on site making rounds excavating the panels to form a contiguous wall around the perimeter of the excavation site. We understand that works are focused on the northern site in particular as a launch shaft may be located there to facilitate tunneling works towards Serangoon North station.

Work at the southern end of the site is progressing as well with Hougang Central (Major) being diverted in recent months. Tree felling has been done near the bus interchange and works to prepare the site for construction are underway. A noise barrier is supposed to be built next to the HDB block abutting the worksite to minimize noise disturbance to residents.

In the coming year, one can expect that diaphragm wall works will shift to include the southern section of the site and the transfer linkway. Once these works are completed, excavation works can then commence. It remains to be seen if the station will be built using the top-down or bottom-up methods, but we believe that we should be able to get a better idea come 2023.
