The area around Teck Ghee station has been under construction for some time, being the first Cross Island Line (CRL) station contract awarded. This is also due to the fact that the station is located directly underneath the upcoming North-South Expressway project. The expressway is one part of a larger North-South Corridor that will also combine other forms of transport such as buses, trains & active mobility modes.

As the station is being built together with the expressway tunnels, the method used for construction is cut & cover. Unlike rail tunnels, road tunnels are much larger to cater for multiple lanes and typically are not constructed by tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in Singapore. As the area is being torn up, placing an MRT station and integrating its construction with that of the expressway tunnel is a way of bringing added convenience to the residents in the area. This may also result in cost savings from the merging of two potentially separate projects into one.

Excavation works have commenced at the southern end of the contract, however these are likely to be for the expressway tunnels. The station boundary wall will be much closer to the junction. Nevertheless this is a good sign of the progress on site. Additionally, earth retaining & stabilizing structures (ERSS) construction seems to have been largely completed at this end of the contract as well. What can be expected in the next phase of work is for some excavation to take place so that road decking can be installed. Once this is completed, the road may be diverted to allow for the construction of the ERSS on the opposite side.

Noticeboards have been placed by contractor Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co to help residents navigate the winding corridors and also to update them on progress. Upcoming changes are also announced ahead of time so that residents can be aware of the impending changes before they take place.
With that, we look forward to the completion of the ERSS elements on the western side of the contract and to the eventual commencement of construction on the eastern side. Do stay tuned as we provide updates when available.
